When you’re
working in an Agile environment, there are a lot of roles and responsibilities
that individuals are assigned. There are a lot of job titles given to
individuals. From Scrum master to stakeholder, product owner to product
manager, team member to team leaders and many more job titles are a part of an
agile environment. So whatever the job title you’re given has a different set
of instructions, tasks, responsibilities, and more.
And that is why
today, we are going to make a comparison between a product owner and a product
manager. It is true that both have to work together under the same roof but
have their own unique tasks.
Product owner
|
Product manager
|
The product owner has the
responsibility of maximizing the value of a product. And for this purpose, he
has to take action to create and manage the product backlog effectively.
|
Whereas,
the job of a product manager is to discover what a user is in need of. With
that, he also has to prioritize what to build next and how to wrap the team’s
mind around a product roadmap.
|
The relation of the product owner
with a specific product is to translate the customer’s need into the product
vision. Precisely, you can say that product owners are customer-centric.
|
On the
other hand, a product owner has to make sure that the product development
process is going smoothly from its conception to release. These managers have
a thorough expertise about a product. With that, they are trained to work
closely with engineering and designing teams to bring the product to its
ending point.
|
Similarly, the product owners have this
task to manage all the user stories. With that, they are also required to
organize customer feedback.
|
Whereas, a product manager has to make
sure that the whole team has all the resources they need to complete the
product owner’s vision.
|
It is the job of a product owner to
identify common roadblocks. They do it by responding to criticism by acting
as a customer support representative.
|
Contrary, the product manager has to
make the business value clear to the engineering and design team by defining
the nitty-gritty of the project.
|
Product owner is the visionary which
means that a product owner is the one to use first party data. Then he has to
compile the list of all the potential features for the product manager.
|
Whereas product manager is the executor
that is, he has to oversee the whole development process leading up to the
release date.
|
The product owner then has to prioritize
all the useful features for the target audience. And then he has to narrow
this list down for the product manager.
|
Then it becomes the product manager’s
job to prioritize what features should be included to fulfill the project’s
intent. He has to make sure that whatever the features he choose has to be
perfect enough to avoid any roadblocks.
|
Remember, the starting and ending of the
whole development process done with the product owner’s approval.
|
Whereas, the product manager is
responsible for handling all the logistical end of the product strategy. In
other words, he has to facilitate the steps in the development process.
|
On one hand, the product owner provides
the blueprint for the product to the product manager. And he also makes sure
that the process is in accordance with the original script.
|
On the other hand, the product manager
delegates which teams are responsible for building new features. Precisely,
product manager has to define all the actions that are needed to bring the
product to the market.
|
Conclusion:
Thus you can now understand that both product owner and
product manager has to deal with the same product but have totally different
tasks. Though the tasks are different, yet they rely on each other’s work. So
by hiring both a product owner and product manager, any organization would tend
to produce a new product at a much faster rate. Not only that, the product
delivered will be effective, flaw-free, and reliable. Hence it is best that you
should know what a product owner and product manager does in an organization
and how both can help to give better output. PSM certification dumps are very helpful to persons to pass their PSM real exam in first try and become product manager
